Having this topic for the upcoming episode has a lot to do with what is taking place on WWE programming. We are being teased and likely going to see the reunion, at least for a night or week of D-Generation X.
I have never met anyone who was not a big fan of the original DX of the 90’s, or at least found them to be entertaining. However, when is it enough?
A couple of years ago when we saw the crotch chops for months done individually by Triple H and HBK. Both were singles wrestlers and it was teasing the crowd for the two original DX members to be back together for the first time since 1998. It was well done. Triple H was coming off of a long run as a heel so him playing to the crowd and joking was enjoyable.
Since then, on different occasional periods of time we see and hear the “Are you ready?” It seems like it sells a lot of merchandise but what else does it do anymore?
We get a fraction of the content that made DX what it was a decade ago. It makes you miss and further realize that the product is not what it use to be and question if it will ever get back to that level?
Think of the legacies in wrestling that haven’t been ruined. The Horsemen, Bret Hart, Stone Cold. They all have the same thing in common. They all took their final night in the ring and rode into the sunset. This doesn’t mean the final days in the ring were planned but when their time was up, they accepted it.
Mick Foley, Terry Funk, Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, all couldn’t accept the end and try to hold on to the glory they once endured.
Triple H and HBK can still perform and have time left in their active careers as single competitors. DX though should be left untouched.
The Horsemen are legendary and have not tarnished their reputation. WWE could have brought the Horsemen back when Flair, Arn, Benoit were all in the company and added an young competitor to the mix or done a number of other plots with it. Luckily they didn’t.
Bret Hart and Stone Cold constantly get asked for one more match but we won’t ever see it. Large part due to the injuries that brought on the end of their careers. Even if they put on the boots and do very little work and just feed off the crowd, they won’t. They were best known for putting on top performances and they can no longer do that, so they won’t ruin the legacy and how they will be remembered.
As I said, HBK and Triple H still are capable of stealing the shows. But DX was never fully about being the best in between the ropes. It was a lifestyle and personality that everyone wanted, and they actually went to the edge with and sometimes over. That lifestyle no longer works in an era that doesn’t have the attitude, supports a PG rating, had kids to tend too in the personal life and stock holders the company has to answer too.
So let the memories be remembered on DVD.
Let the memories be remembered through old t-shirts you use to try and get away with wearing in school.
But don’t destroy the memories with a censored 2009 version of a wonderful creative creation that was done at what was probably the best time ever in the business.
