Despite there being no semblance of an off-season in professional wrestling, WrestleMania is always seen as a season finale of sorts. Thus, the RAW after WrestleMania is the start of the next chapter. It’s why we get big stars returning from injuries, shocking storylines, and WWE always pulls out all of the stops.
It looked like they were doing just that with a Kofi Kingston vs. Seth Rollins match on WWE RAW last night. The bout would be similar to the WrestleMania 35 main event as both the RAW and SmackDown heavyweight titles would be on the line and one champion would hold the Universal and WWE titles. It was an exciting prospect and a reason to watch the entirety of a three hour television show.
However, in the most WWE fashion possible, the match was broken up by … The Bar. It was then turned into a nothing tag match between the four men, and Rollins & Kingston both vowed to have the match down the line. Whether or not that happens is anyone’s guess, but promising a match only to not deliver it here was a terrible move.
With ratings going down on a yearly basis and a move to FOX in the future, WWE should be trying to not only retain those that tune in for major episodes of RAW but to create new viewers. However, all this move did was show that nothing has changed. There’s no respect for the viewer’s time and if you do stay up for all three hours hoping to catch a historic moment you’ll get Sheamus and Cesaro instead.
This was an underwhelming way to end a marquee episode, and it’s no wonder that the third hour was once again down significantly from the first. After all, a lot of people expected the match to not happen in the first place. Those that turned off their televisions were the smart ones. Everyone that stuck around got egg on their face for thinking that WWE would actually deliver on their promised match.
Regardless of how you feel about one man holding both titles or either man having a one-day title reign (I hate it), there’s nothing more aggravating than having your time wasted. WWE did that once again on Monday night.
