Vince McMahon shocked WWE viewers last night when he announced that Kofi Kingston wouldn’t be receiving his title shot at WWE Fastlane as previously expected. Many fans were livid, as this was another perceived slight at Kingston, one of the most underrated wrestlers employed by the company. Our Facebook page featured dozens of angry comments as fans were furious with what happened.
While a company wants to make consumers happy, this reaction is exactly what McMahon wanted from the angle. It’s also a sign that WrestleMania 35 plans are changing and that fans will be getting exactly what they want, just at a later date and a far bigger venue. Let’s take a step back from our emotions and look at what’s happening.
Since Kingston isn’t getting his due at Fastlane, this means that his one attempt at WWE gold is still yet to come. He’s still being positioned as the top babyface on SmackDown at the moment, and one that is now being deliberately screwed over. This means that his organic push is continuing and that he’ll get a shot later on. The next major event after Fastlane is the grandaddy of them all, WrestleMania 35.
What better place to crown a babyface champion and create a historic moment than WrestleMania? I believe that this is McMahon’s line of thinking by replacing Kingston in the match at Fastlane. Kingston winning the belt on a B-show won’t create a moment that is remembered forever. However, if he does it when everyone is watching then WWE will have capitalized on this moment in the biggest way possible.
Doing the right thing immediately isn’t always the best course of action. Sometimes fans need to wait a little bit. Feel some disappointment, and then watch as their hero overcomes adversity. I believe that’s exactly what we’ll see come WrestleMania 35. Then we’ll all be able to celebrate KofiMania in style after he topples Daniel Bryan once and for all.
