Shotzi Blackheart knows we all go a little mad sometimes.
Blackheart is set to make her MLW debut at Summer of the Beasts. She spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about her MLW debut, as well as her love of horror movies, which was on full display as the backdrop for the conversation.
Pritchard noted how detailed the wall was, pointing out some of the iconic images like the neon marquee sign from Beetlejuice. Shotzi said it was a passion project that came together slowly, noting that it’s pretty easy to figure out what gifts to buy her.
“Sometimes I find stuff on the road. When I travel, sometimes there will be a horror convention going on at the same time I am doing a show. So, I will stop in and I’ll buy some stuff, obviously. Or I do a lot of signings at horror conventions, so I definitley buy a lot of stuff. While I’m doing my signings, during my breaks, I’ll go shopping. But a lot of stuff I get online, a lot of things I’m gifted. People know I love horror, so it is really easy to buy gifts for me. You get anything from an 80s horror movie and I’m a happy camper.”
Shotzi Blackheart wanted to get a little kookier with her WWE persona
Shotzi (sans Blackheart) was billed as the ‘Ballsy Badass’ in WWE. She came to the ring in a customized tank and wore a helmet with horns on it. This persona was very popular with fans, as it had an edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe. Did she ever pitch using her love for slasher/horror films as a potential gimmick in WWE?
“Well, I had been trying to, forever. Especially when I came up on the main roster and Vince turned me heel. I was like, ‘Okay, what does bad guy Shotzi look like?’ And I would knock on Vince’s door and be like, ‘Hey, if we are going to go this bad guy route, I’d really love to change up my character.’ Because at that time, he was also like, ‘Okay, you are going to be a bad guy. We are going to take away your tank and your helmet and strip you down a little bit.’ And I was like, ‘Well, could I get a little more psychotic? Or a little more horror-esque?’
“Yeah, I definitely wanted to play with my character. And it just never happened. That also has to do with not being on TV too much. So, I never really got to develop my character in any new direction. But yeah, that is definitely something that I had pitched many times. Especially since I hosted Halloween Havoc so many times. I just thought I was a natural pick to become a more of a spooky character. It just was never in my cards, I guess.”

Shotzi Blackheart on what’s next, MLW
Shotzi said there weren’t any specific horror characters she had in mind, but wanted to go “balls to the walls” like Linda Blair’s Regan MacNeil in The Exorcist.
“[I wanted to] just get real kooky and crazy with it. Like a possessed character. I don’t know. Yeah, I never really got to experiment too much with it. But I would have loved anything in that realm.”
Shotzi will start a new chapter in her pro wrestling career with MLW. She is thankful for the platform and looks forward to showing just how creative she can be.
“I’m still figuring out what this new Shotzi will look like. But I’m thankful for MLW for giving me the platform. And I feel like they are game to let me really play creatively, which I’m also very grateful for,” she said. “I’m excited to finally be able to run with it and get creative. I’m excited for everyone to see how much I can build a character, because I never really got that opportunity. But I feel like I’ve always been very creative. That’s just me, and I’m excited to use my creativity.”
MLW Summer of the Beasts will stream live on the MLW YouTube channel on Thursday, June 26 at 9 pm.
