Gypsy Mac recalls for Beynefit For Bey experience.
Last weekend, WWE took over Las Vegas for its biggest event of the year, WrestleMania 41. Last month, Future Stars of Wrestling put together its own special event in Sin City, stacked with talent from WWE, TNA, AEW, and the independent circuit. The event, titled Beynefit For Bey, came together with the aim of raising funds for TNA star Chris Bey, who sustained a severe neck injury last October.
Amongst the talent lineup was FSW Women’s Champion Gypsy Mac, who successfully defended her title against Katie Forbes. WrestleZone’s Ella Jay recently caught up with Mac to discuss the event environment, which she describes as nothing but heart-warming.
“It was honestly so surreal to be a part of something where there’s just so much love and positive energy that you feel radiating from the locker room, to the security, to the fans, to production. Everyone was there to show Chris how much we loved him,” Mac said. “It’s making me like emotional talking about it because being able to be there and be in the locker room and see Chris define what doctors told him he couldn’t do, it was just such an awesome moment. Chris became a mentor to me being in Vegas, so I was honored that he wanted me to be a part of the show, honestly.”
In the final moments of the benefit show, Bey walked to the ring alongside his girlfriend and indie wrestler Brittnie Brooks. From there, he embraced Karrion Kross, Alex Hammerstone, and his tag partner Ace Austin, then thanked the crowd for their ongoing support.
Chris Bey Is ‘A Positive Light,’ Per Gypsy Mac
Two years ago, Gypsy Mac moved out of New Mexico to settled into Las Vegas. Since then, she has captured the East Los Lucha Women’s and FSW Women’s Championship. Additionally, she’s appeared as an extra on TNA television, thanks to some help from Bey, a fellow Vegas resident and someone she now considers to be a mentor and friend.
“Some of my fond memories are with [Chris] are just him taking time out of his day to give me feedback and to watch my match,” Mac said when asked about her favorite memories with Bey. “He doesn’t have to do that. Chris doesn’t have to sit there and be like ‘Oh, next time do this or next time do that. You could have flowed better with this or let’s tighten up that move.’ People don’t have to do that in wrestling, and for him to be able to take that time really meant a lot.
“Another moment is working out with him. I got to work out with him in the gym and just see how hard he pushes himself and get his knowledge on something other than wrestling. Hanging out with him with an environment that wasn’t in wrestling was really fun because he’s such a funny guy. He’s always a positive light, no matter what state you see him in.”
