Calypso recalls the surreal moment of meeting one of her heroes, Mickie James.
Following her recovery from a rib injury, Mickie James returned to in-ring action over the summer, competing at the Association Biterroise de Catch’s “Festival International De Catch” event in France. There, James defeated Aurora Teves in a Jean Corne Cup match. Calypso, a rising star in the European wrestling scene, was also on the card, defeating Lauriana in an ABC Women’s Championship number one contenders match.
While James and Calypso didn’t meet in the ring, they crossed paths backstage, creating a moment that Calypso will never forget.
“Oh my God, that was just a crazy moment,” Calypso told WrestleZone’s Ella Jay. “I was really looking forward to that show because she was going to be there. I feel like that was an accomplishment of all my dreams. When I was a kid, she was one of the first wrestlers I saw. [Mickie] and Melina were my favorites when I was a child, and I saw her and I loved her. When I was ten, I got the opportunity to go to WrestleMania 26, and I saw her wrestle, and I was just amazed. I think it was my dad or one of my brothers that took the picture that I posted. It was during Mickie James’ entrance.”
“It was at this moment that I wanted to wrestle, that [I knew] I wanted to do this. So when I saw her and shared the backstage with her, it was just an amazing moment. The child in me was like, ‘Oh my God, that’s why you do that. That’s your dream. That was one of your role models. And you’re kind of co-workers with her now.’ So that was just amazing. She’s so sweet.”
Calypso later shared a photo of their encounter, showcasing the full-circle layers it provided.
