John Cena isn’t one to miss WrestleMania. However, we are mere weeks away from the biggest WWE show of the year and Cena still hasn’t popped up on WWE television. So, will he wind up competing at or will he shockingly not compete due to film commitments.
If he does come back, here are five potential John Cena WrestleMania 35 opponents that make sense.
Kurt Angle
This would be a poetic choice. John Cena’s first match in the WWE was against Angle and the two had a rivalry during Cena’s rise to becoming the promotion’s biggest star. Cena ending the career of Angle would feel right. He’s even teased the match on Instagram, so this could possibly be the direction that WWE is going in.
Braun Strowman
There aren’t many dream matches that haven’t happened over John Cena’s career. He’s had main event matches with generations of wrestlers, but he hasn’t had a real feud with Braun Strowman. Not only would this allow Cena to test himself against a giant, but it would be a welcome change for Strowman whose current WWE direction appears just to be comedy bits.
R-Truth
While they had a memorable feud while Truth was a heel, the two in-ring veterans haven’t interacted much in recent years. However, R-Truth has constantly kept Cena’s name in the minds of WWE fans lately by calling him his “hero.” Considering Truth can still go inside the ring, this would make for a fun bout and a reward for his years of service, even if it won’t be a marquee match.
Samoa Joe
The bout makes sense for a number of reasons but the biggest is that it will feel like a big deal. Back when Cena was the face of WWE, Samoa Joe was wowing fans in both Ring of Honor and TNA. He was seen as the face of the opposition. The two were seen as opposites. Joe, the gritty indie star that was putting on five star matches. Cena, the corporate babyface that had every possible advantage one would want and massive amount of marketing. Despite how dissimilar they were, they were both alike in one key area: people wanted to see them wrestle. This would be an iconic showdown. A match once thought to be impossible finally coming to fruition. It would also serve as a WrestleMania moment for Joe, who many thought would never see the bright lights of the largest wrestling promotion in the world.
The Undertaker
If there’s any storyline that seems unresolved from last year, it’s the embarrassing loss that John Cena suffered to The Undertaker. The quick squash match seemed more like it was setting something up, such as a bigger rematch in the future, but there has been no hint at such a match so far. Cena is talented enough to make Undertaker look good in a bout, and this would make a good send-off for the WWE mainstay.
