Sabu recalls how his pair of AEW appearances came together in 2023.
Days before AEW’s 2023 Double or Nothing pay-per-view, wrestling legend Sabu made a surprise appearance on AEW Dynamite to help Adam Cole even the odds against the Jericho Appreciation Society. After scaring off the Jericho Appreciation Society on Dynamite, Sabu later emerged as the special guest enforcer for Cole’s unsanctioned Double or Nothing match against Chris Jericho. Ultimately, with the aid of Sabu, Roderick Strong, and Britt Baker, Cole defeated Jericho via the referee’s decision.
During a recent interview with Steve Fall for WrestlingNewsCo, Sabu explained how these appearances came together, beginning with a phone call from Jericho.
“Chris Jericho, he called me out and said ‘Hey, what are you doing Wednesday?’ I said ‘Nothing,’ and he goes ‘We got a spot for you. Boom, boom, boom. Can you make it Sunday?’ I said ‘Yes I can,'” Sabu recalled.
“So then I called him back and said ‘Oh, I f***ed up. I’m booked on Sunday.’ He goes, ‘Can you do both or cancel?’ I said ‘Yeah,’ and so I did bot, but yeah, he called me. It was just a spur of the moment [thing]. They were in Vegas and they needed a surprise or something.”
As of now, the 2023 Double or Nothing event marks Sabu’s last AEW appearance. AEW President Tony Khan, however, previously stated that he’d be open to working with him again sometime in the future.
