4.) Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura
There is a simple recipe of where two non-WWE guys who develop enough of a reputation on the independent circuit just have this built-in aura that if they have a match together, the fans are going to just eat it up.
Outside of that, there isn’t much more to say for either Finn Balor or Shinsuke Nakamura, as they are merely two of the top wrestlers in that type of category who could have great matches with Bryan in the future.
From my own perspective, neither of these compare to the excitement I’ll have for the AJ Styles match, as I consider him to be an overall more entertaining performer than both Balor and Nakamura, but I can’t deny the possibility of magic happening between Bryan and The Demon King or The King of Strong Style.
One of these could happen as soon as something like SummerSlam if Nakamura wins the WWE Championship and holds it that long, while the other is surely on WWE’s to-do list somewhere down the line.
5.) Dolph Ziggler
This was hinted at on Tuesday night when Dolph Ziggler approached Bryan backstage and said he was looking forward to beating him. Bryan retorted that he could certainly try to do that, and it was left at just that exchange.
When these two faced off at Bragging Rights 2010, it was my favorite match of the year, even more so than The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 26.
For context, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker have always been my #1 and #2 favorite wrestlers of all time, respectively, so for this to overshadow that is quite an accomplishment.
Ever since then, I’ve been hoping to see Ziggler vs. Bryan in another classic and even though it’s been done before, there’s nothing wrong with revisiting something amazing from the past for a rerun.
6.) Virtually Any of the Cruiserweights
Before the cries of heresy ring out, let me first state that Bryan was last billed at 210 pounds, and if Buddy Murphy has taught us anything, it’s that cutting weight to work the 205 Live brand is something WWE is more than open to having someone do.
I also want to specify that by no means would I want Bryan to be relegated to the cruiserweight division and stuck there for the rest of his career or anything of the sort, so don’t start panicking about that.
Instead, I just wanted to highlight how 205 Live showcases some of the best in-ring performers the company has, but nobody seems to be willing to watch.
It’s nuts, because we as fans seem to be always complaining that there needs to be more in-ring action and less talking and video packages, but when given a product that revolves around just wrestling, nobody appears to actually be interested.
If you haven’t seen them perform, you’re missing out, because nearly every single person in the cruiserweight division is incredible and they could all have amazing matches with Bryan.
TJP, Mustafa Ali, Neville (if he ever returns), Cedric Alexander, Tyler Bate and Pete Dunne from the United Kingdom division and more are all under 205 pounds and have stellar fights all the time.
The Brian Kendrick could be particularly fun, given their history together, once he’s returned from his injury.
Part of me thinks the absolute most interesting of them all, though, would be a match between Bryan and Gentleman Jack Gallagher, as that could be something that is just pure art in the ring.
7.) Honorable Mentions
There are so, so many names that could have made this list, but I wanted to keep it at a clean “lucky seven” rather than overload it to a top ten or twenty.
With that in mind, some of the Superstars I was entertaining who didn’t make the cut were Cesaro and Seth Rollins (two people we’ve seen Bryan face before, but he’d definitely have more great matches with), Chad Gable and Jason Jordan for their underrated wrestling skills, and both Samoa Joe and Bobby Roode as we’ve never seen those before.
For the most part, though, if Bryan is paired up with practically anybody on the roster, he’s likely to pull a great match out of the feud. It’s doubtful a match between he and someone talented like Tye Dillinger would be a snoozer or that he couldn’t even elevate a guy like Mojo Rawley to the best match he’d ever have.
The two people I would be hesitant to book him against, though, are Braun Strowman and Brock Lesnar, not only out of safety reasons, but also because the David vs. Goliath element is something I feel WWE focuses on a little too much and I don’t think I’d buy into that being a legitimate contest, but to each his own.
The overall scope of this of nothing but positivity: one of the best in-ring performers who is a kind, passionate and beloved member of the sports entertainment community is able to live out his dream again and we can all strap ourselves in for the ride.
