My latest column on upgruv.com, a site for all things trending, is a review on the Netflix series “GLOW.” Here’s an excerpt:
They should enjoy seeing training required for these ladies to perform in the ring and on the microphone. Though, even viewers unfamiliar to the world of wrestling should enjoy seeing the work that goes into becoming one of these performers.
Without hesitation, “GLOW” leans into the ridiculousness that makes professional wrestling unique amongst forms of entertainment. Without ridiculousness, it’s doubtful professional wrestling would be the global money-making venture it is currently. And it’s with the understanding that professional wrestling is big business that viewers should watch “GLOW,” because that knowledge will inform exactly what the characters are in this for on the show.
There is a pivotal scene that was particularly enjoyable. In it, one of the characters gains clarity during the excitement of and has an ironic epiphany as to the soap-opera dynamic at play. All thanks to that wise and talented “Steel Horse.”
“GLOW” establishes that professional wrestling is akin to theater, only with a live-action feel. That has always been true, but maybe this series will help those who aren’t fans of professional wrestling connect more with the art of craft that is required to be a success in the genre. If so, a lot of credit will belong to actresses playing the main characters.
Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin are fantastic in their respective roles. Their storyline is developed from real-life conflict, and those threads are woven throughout the season.
“GLOW” does not hide from social elements. In fact, the series utilizes the stereotyping that these women face because of how society judges their physical features. The poignancy this adds to concept that could be played just laughs is a credit to the writing staff.
