In the latest interview from the PodNasty Wrestling Podcast, WZ Daily regular Alfred Konuwa spoke with Rey Mysterio during this weekend’s Lucha Underground tapings. Mysterio discussed several topics, including the shocking UFC 194 finish, why he signed with Lucha Underground and WWE. The interview begins at around the 11:26 mark and you can listen to it at this link. Below are some interview highlights:
On McGregor beating Aldo:
“It made Jose Aldo look like a chump,” said Mysterio.
“I told my son, my son’s 18 and we’ve been following UFC for a minute now, and I said ‘man they’re taking over the Brazilian division.’ With Silva fighting Weidman, Dos Anos is probably the only champion right now—and Fabricio Werdum—that are representing Brazil. But TJ Dillashaw taking on Barao, it’s like ‘wow it’s crazy…I enjoy it though, I enjoy it very much.”
On Why he chose Lucha Underground:
“This is the style that I grew up (in), the style that I started training, this is my base, my fundamental,” said Mysterio.
“I never dreamed of going to WWE or WCW, my dream was always making it to CMLL because AAA didn’t exist back then. And then, next thing you know AAA started, the opportunity came. My base was always high-flying. I always wanted to get the opportunity to show the world what I can do. So there was no other company out there that was displaying that but Lucha Underground. When I saw the first season, I was blown away.”
On if he still watches WWE:
“On occasion, now that Alberto (Del Rio) went back, I’m good friends with Alberto so I keep him on point. Lucha Dragons, I’m great friends with the Sin Cara that’s there right now.
“I can’t watch a whole show, not even when I was there. Actually, when I was there I would hardly watch the shows. I would DVR them, but it was just hard for me to sit down and watch wrestling, not because it was a bad show or a good show, it was just because when I got home I didn’t want to have nothing to do with wrestling. I just wanted to be around my kids and my wife.”
Mysterio also talked about future stars of Lucha Underground, and his rocky relationship with Eric Bischoff in WCW.
