Monday Night Mayhem DVD Review: “YouShoot: Chyna”
Produced By: Kayfabe Commentaries
DVD Review Written By: Shawn “The Angry Hero” Marek
With the Christmas season upon us, it’s always a hard gig to find the perfect gift for the wrestling fan in your life. This fan, let’s say his name is, oh I don’t know, Mark, has everything and has seen everything: the typically jaded wrestling fan. Thankfully for us (yeah, I’ll lump myself in here), the mighty Kayfabe Commentaries has a multitude of solutions.
Exhibit A: YouShoot: Chyna. The WWE Attitude-era icon decides to brave the masses by taking on their questions in the popular YouShoot format, moderated by KC’s own Sean Oliver. Chyna (or Joanie Laurer if you will) takes on a barrage of questions from a largely well-mannered and polite group of fans. Honestly, given what she’s been through and how misogynistic male wrestling fans could be, Chyna gets off scott-free. Granted, a bit of lewdness is to be expected here, but it never gets out of hand.
In terms of content, YouShoot: Chyna does not break new ground or reveal anything shocking about “The 9th Wonder of the World.” She’s open about her struggles with addiction and her very public relationship with Sean “X-Pac” Waltman. Chyna gives an honest perspective on reality television and how it affected her life in a positive way, making her realize how toxic her relationship with X-Pac was. Speaking of men in her life, she seems still hard up for Triple H, concurring that he was the love of her life, despite him leaving her for Stephanie McMahon.
Regardless of her porn past (and present), Chyna is reserved and diplomatic in her answers. She never goes over the edge in revealing backstage dirt, as evidenced by the reoccurring “What’s in the Bag?” segment. When presented with a number of drug items, Chyna balks at giving answers and seems uncomfortable at the memories they incur. She is also reticent when asked what Diva looked the best naked, claiming that she never looked and assumes it was her who was the best in the buff. It’s a weird vibe.
There are some good stories snuck in here on YouShoot: Chyna. She addresses her brief dating experience with Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake back when she was 18. Chyna also dissects her kinship with Vince McMahon and how frustrating it was to not be able to please him when she succeeded in outside projects. Given the fact that in recent years, WWE Divas such as Maria Kanellis and Stacy Keibler have been largely ostracized for showing ambition outside of the squared circle, Chyna’s words are prophetic. There are some laughable questions as well that can only show up on YouShoot, my favorite being whether or not Christy Hemme gave “treats” to Triple H, leading to her WWE release.
If you really liked the WWE Attitude Era and are a huge fan of Chyna, then you’ll dig this DVD. If you’re looking for juicy reveals and rage-filled diatribes from demons unearthed, then you might want to look elsewhere. Nonetheless, please support our friends at Kayfabe Commentaries and pick up YouShoot: Chyna, along with the all of the other great KC releases by logging on to their official website over at www.KayfabeCommentaries.com.
