Rey Mysterio Reflects On Silliness Of Having His Eye Popped Out At Extreme Rules 2020

Rey Mysterio opens up about his infamous eye-popping out at Extreme Rules 2020.

Mysterio wrestled Seth Rollins at the event, in a brand-new match type. With Rollins targeting Mysterio’s eye for weeks, they wrestled in an “Eye for an Eye Match” at the PPV.

When the match was announced, rumors swirled about what an “Eye for an Eye Match” could be. It was reported that both men would try to rip each other’s eye out, with CGI being used for the effect.

In the end, Seth Rollins used the metal stairs to “pop out” a fake eye from Rey Mysterio.

Rey Mysterio recently spoke with Sam Roberts at Fanatics Fest (H/T to Post Wrestling for the transcription). He said that he is “game for whatever”, but only as long as it made sense.

“You kind of have to look at it from an outside point of view.” Rey Mysterio said. “Being the fact that we were going through a pandemic, we didn’t have fans inside the building. We were doing something very different. So, I’ve always been game with whatever it is that we wanna create next, I’m in. Just explain to me how we can make it come across where it makes sense and at the end of the day, it is TV. We know it’s not reality.”

Rey Mysterio: It Sounded Silly, But We Thought We Could Pull It Off

Rey Mysterio continued. The former WWE Champion added that it was silly, but though they could pull off the challenge.

“But overall, the way it was explained. Now, it sounds funny, sounds silly. At the time, it sounded probably sillier. But we thought we can pull it away, we can pull through with this. But, overall, those are like challenges that present themselves and you either come across and do a good job and then talk about it later, maybe laugh. Or say, ‘Oh, that was good’ or, ‘That was bad.’ But overall, it’s in the moment that you have to live and you kind of have to push through it and make it work somehow, one way or another.”
