Samoa Joe is not interested in doing a vanity match for himself. Instead, he wants to give the fans what they’re interested in.
Speaking at a panel at Terrificon 2024 (via Fandom Spotlite), Samoa Joe was asked to name who he would want to work a program with if it were up to him. He made it clear that he was interested in having the matches that fans wanted.
“It’s a tough answer because I’m only interested in doing the matchups that the fans want to see,” Samoa Joe said. “I have zero interest in doing a vanity match of somebody who’s my dream opponent because I don’t do this for me. I’m not doing this to pad my resume, to add to my portfolio. I do this for the fans who want to come and watch it. So inevitably, that question at this point in my career and my life is left in your hands. What match do you want to see?
“Because that’s what I’m interested in doing. I really have zero interest in doing a match with somebody just because they’re skilled or I think it could be a great match. No, at this point, with what time that I have left in my career, I want to dedicate that time to what fans want, not what I want.”
Samoa Joe Is Interested In Facing Will Ospreay
That being said, Samoa Joe also named Will Ospreay and Kenny Omega as two first-time opponents he would be interested in facing. He noted that there were plenty of fresh matchups.
“Several dudes. We got Kenny Omega coming back, Will Ospreay,” he said. “The list really goes on and on. There’s a lot of matchups that are fresh that I haven’t had yet. But those two definitely jump to the top of the list.”

Joe has been absent since the July 10 episode of AEW Dynamite. He had been filming for Twisted Metal. There is no word on when he will return.
