Natalya knows that ring gear can be important to a wrestler for many different reasons.
Recently, during an interview with McKenzie Mitchell as part of her Threads series, Natalya mentioned that the wrestling gear also tells a story.
“Your gear does tell a story. And every single piece of gear that I have, and I’ve been in close to 2000 matches, if not more, in WWE. I haven’t counted all of them, but we are getting close to that 2000 mark if we’re not past that. And every piece of gear tells a story. I can literally look at a certain outfit and go, ‘Oh, that was the time when I wrestled Charlotte Flair at NXT Takeover.’
“Or I’ll look at a jacket and go, ‘Oh, that was the jacket that I was the number one in the Women’s Royal Rumble.’ Or, ‘Oh, that was the jacket that I wore when I walked down the ramp at WrestleMania 35 with Beth Phoenix.’ ‘Those were the boots that Rey Mysterio gave me.’ Those things, I can pinpoint those moments, those conversations, the matches, the plan. Like the planning and the preparation of the matches, the hugs, and the tears after.”
Natalya also spoke about the significance of her Saudi Arabia gear.
“The outfit that I wore to have the very first Women’s match in Saudi Arabia, it was a one-piece black, vinyl, full bodysuit. With a Natalya shirt over it. That was like, because we were the very first Women’s Match in Saudi Arabia, they made us make the shirt even bigger. We had to sew on a piece of fabric to the bottom of the shirt because they weren’t sure that it was going to cover enough,” Natalya said.
Watch List
WrestleZone spoke with Natalya, who was asked if there was one match that best represented her in-ring work. She singled out her NXT Women’s title match with Charlotte Flair at NXT TakeOver as one of her favorite matches from her career.
“I love the match that I had with Charlotte Flair in NXT in 2014, at the Takeover. I watched that match, and it was when Charlotte was just getting started in WWE and it was her first big moment,” Natalya explained. “I’m so proud of that match because I was able to bring something special out of myself that I wasn’t able to show before. When I started in WWE, we were fighting for everything. Scratching, clawing, fighting tooth and nail to have anything.
“Triple H gave me the opportunity to have a match that was 20 minutes long. I’d never had that before, I never had the chance to do that,” she continued. “And then to be able to pull something out of Charlotte that she didn’t know she had inside her and to help her discover what an incredible performer she would become, it’s one of my shining moments in my career, and I’ll never not be proud of that match.”
