This weekend, Swerve Strickland has a major match. He will be challenging Samoa Joe for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship at the inaugural AEW Dynasty pay-per-view. Recently, the former AEW World Tag Team Champion was interviewed by Rick Ucchino on iHeart Radio.
During the interview, Swerve Strickland shared that he can relate with All Elite Wrestling in so many ways.
“I can identify with AEW in a lot of ways. Cuz when I first came into AEW a lot of people didn’t look at me to be in the position that I am in now. The consistency, and growth, and staying focused, and staying out of a lot bull crap really kept me going, progressing, and moving forward. Put my ego aside, following a lot of humility and just being a team player and understanding where my position is, where I want to go. But also understanding and know that I am ready. Knowing when it’s time to push the limits a little bit.”
Swerve Strickland shares what is AEW all about
“That’s what AEW is all about. When I was watching and seeing it from 2021 and 2022 when I came in, it was about pushing those boundaries, challenging the authority of the structure of how pro wrestling is breaking those things a little bit. Creating and making things your own. And proving those Naysayers wrong and doing things your way. And I’ve dealt with a lot of doubt and a lot of criticisms faced, till facing till this day. I still face things to this day so I can relate and see myself in what AEW is. I feel like that relationship is what is bringing me to the forefront of pro wrestling right now. Especially as an African American man, we already face a lot of these certain criticisms with moving goal posts and certain things like which we’ve discussed about. But it’s always been those little talks are there. But it’s to break the mold. And that’s what I’m here to do,” Swerve Strickland said.
