Gunther Is Finally Ready To Fully Embrace His Intercontinental Title Record

Gunther is in the midst of a record-breaking WWE Intercontinental Championship reign.

The Austrain powerhouse beat Ricochet to win the title in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has held the belt for over 600 days, defending it more than 20 times on television alone.

He recently spoke with Double T Mornings On Demand, discussing how it feels to be a record-breaking champion in the WWE.

“It still feels a little bit surreal. Seeing your own name on the list with all those real legends and greats that held the title for a long time as well.”

But its also very important that you see yourself like that and recognize yourself as one of them. In my case, actually being on top of the list, as best. But, you have to fully embrace that. It takes a little while to do that, but I’m fully there now, I think.”

“I’m not stopping yet. I still have a little in me when it comes to the Intercontinental Championship. I’m fully focused on what the next challenge is.”

Defending The Title Is ‘Daily Business’ For Gunther

Gunther was also asked if it gets harder the more title defences he has to make. The champion noted that while defending the belt is his daily business, it may be one big chance for his opponent, so they will put their all into the bout.

“Its definitely harder all the time. Because you are the champion, you are always in the situation that, after a while defending the title, it’s like, it’s your business, it’s your daily business as the champion.”

“But whoever you face, it’s their one chance. I’m always gonna have an opponent who is fully motivated, and will throw everything he has into this match. That’s a challenge, but also I like it. It’s very important, because it forces me to stay on edge and don’t get too comfortable.”

Gunther will defend his WWE Intercontinental title against Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL.
