One of the most popular female wrestlers is Taya Valkyrie. She is a former WWE Superstar, a former TNA Wrestling star, and a multi-time Reina de Reinas Champion. La Wera Loca is currently signed with All Elite Wrestling along with her husband Johnny TV (John Morrison).
Recently, Valkyrie sat down for an interview in the Lightweights Podcasts. During the interview, La Wera Loca mentioned that she suffered her biggest injury during TripleMania when she made history by becoming the first-ever non-Mexican to win the Reina de Reinas Championship.
During the title match, she broke her nose. Or, as she tells it, her nose “basically exploded” from the impact of the kick.
“The worst one was in TripleMania in AAA. Lucha Libre AAA in Mexico City, when I first won the Reina de Reinas Championship. I’m the first non-Mexican-born woman to do so in the history of 30-plus years of the company. And I was kicked to right in the face and my nose basically exploded on my face. Like a soccer kick. My face was downwards as I was coming back into the ring and the girl just went [mimics the kick].
Taya Valkyrie knew something was wrong right away
“I knew right away something was wrong. And also I had like a flash and I… knock on wood like… I’m very superstitious about this stuff. But like… I never really broken anything. I’m one of those people, I don’t know. Even though I have done so many crazy things and sports and dance and everything my whole life. So I knew something was instantly wrong because my face kind of went numb. And I saw like a flash of light. So, which means that I was kind of knocked out on my feet. And I remember saying to my opponent, ‘Go to the people, go to the people because I need a second. I need a second.’ Because I didn’t know what was happening, but I felt this kind of dizziness.
“When you watch the video back, you can clearly see that I am going through the motions for like this short period of time. Or you even see me look at the Jumbotron and wipe my face. And I’m like, ‘What’s happening’ kind of thing. Then all of a sudden, two more minutes into the match it’s almost like I come to. Like I was doing everything but like a robot like I was kind of programmed. So there was no emotion behind my eyes. I was very much like just going through the motions. And yeah, my nose ended up over here [points at the middle of her left cheek]. I finished the match. Everything was fine.”
What happened when Taya Valkyrie went to the AAA Medical Team
“I did go to medical right away. Because my mentor who is now passed away, but El Hijo del Perro Aguayo. He saw me right after the match and he was like, he gave me a hug and I’m like crying. This is like a big historical moment in my career and everything and he’s like, ‘You need to see the doctor. You did great. But you need to see the doctor.’ So I was taken basically into the back. I was put in this tiny room.
“And two doctors looked at me. I mean… In my head it was like a size of like a broom closet. I have no idea. And my friend Argonus held my hand, gave me a shot of Tequila and the doctor said count to three. And on two they put my nose back. In it’s spot. And I felt like my whole face shift again. It wasn’t until the next day when I could go get X-rays. But I was like very adamant like, ‘Please put it back.’ Cuz I didn’t want to… When you brake your nose you’re supposed to get it re broken if it’s not set properly. So I was happy that that happened. But the next day I found out I had like a Triple Fracture. And I didn’t require surgery and I have never had surgery on my nose.”
Taya Valkyrie will get her nose fixed only after she is done with wrestling
“I think I have more allergy problems now. Because all my little bones are all screwed up in there. But eventually, I’ll have to get my nose fixed and stuff like that. But I think that’s going to be after I am done with wrestling,” Taya Valkyrie said.
