Kevin Owens popped up in the closing moments of NXT New Year’s Evil.
Earlier in the show, SmackDown Grayson Waller appeared during a backstage segment with Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams. Hayes set up a match between the two Iron Survivor Challenge winners, and he even said Williams would put his NXT Championship opportunity on the line. Later on, Shawn Michaels said a former NXT Champion would be stopping by so they could watch the main event.
In the main event, Williams and Waller battled it out in a thrilling contest. Hayes came out and distracted Williams, and it looked like Trick was about to lose his title shot. However, former NXT Champion Kevin Owens arrived, and he cost Waller the match. He rolled Waller back into the ring, and Williams pinned him for the win.
Owens and Waller have been feuding in recent weeks on WWE SmackDown.
Williams had been set to challenge Ilja Dragunov for the NXT Championship on Tuesday. However, the match was postponed, as WWE announced that Dragunov was not cleared to compete.
