Jeff Hardy says he kind of feels like a ghost backstage in AEW.
Previously, following Jeff Hardy’s WWE departure in December 2021, he described how he sometimes felt like a ghost, as he would wonder why he was there, and he did not feel important. Jeff has had a turbulent run in AEW, as he was suspended in the aftermath of his June 2022. He returned to the company in April 2023, but he and Matt Hardy have been used inconsistently on AEW programming.
During an appearance on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy shared his thoughts on his current standing in AEW. He described how he still somewhat feels like a ghost backstage. (H/t Jeremy Lambert of Fightful for the transcription)
“When I first came back, it was pretty exciting, I didn’t know what was going to be happening in the near future,” Jeff Hardy said. “The last time I was in this extreme dimension of your podcast, I said in WWE I felt like I was a ghost just walking around backstage.
“Honestly, I kind of still feel like that at AEW just because not being involved in something cool, and I feel like there is something so special that we have within us to really bring out, and that brings me to things with ego. Honestly, I’m in a place in my life where wearing this Jeff Hardy (shirt), I feel like a goofy goober for wearing my own shirt. ‘Why does this feel so goofy to wear my own shirt?’ “
Jeff Hardy: I Think I Need To Bring My Ego Back
Jeff Hardy continued by explaining how there is not much of a difference between who he is as a performer and as a person. He admitted that he may need to bring back his ego. Jeff stated that you have to create moments yourself.
“My thing has always been, there isn’t much difference between the in-ring performer Jeff Hardy and the reality and human world Jeff Hardy,” he said. “At the show the other night, at the concert, I talked about ego, and another wrestler said, ‘You’ve never had an ego,’ but I think I need to bring my ego back ten times more intense than it was when I was the anti-Christ of professional wrestling.”
“It feels like it’s inevitable. It feels so right. You have to create the moments yourself and when you’re passionate about something, and little by little, we’re eventually going to get there.”
During the podcast, Matt Hardy discussed his frustrations as he stated that he believes there’s a better way to utilize The Hardys in AEW. Check out his comments here.
