It is safe to say that current AEW and Ring of Honor star Maria Kanellis is one of the pillars in the evolution of women’s wrestling. She has performed in a plethora of promotions and has helped in the growth of female wrestlers everywhere she has worked.
In the most recent episode of Ring of Honor, the self-proclaimed First Lady of Pro Wrestling showed up and seemingly distracted the opponents in her husband Mike Kanellis’ match.
Seeing this, a fan claimed that Maria Kanellis is still stuck in the Divas Era of professional wrestling.
The former WWE Superstar replied by stating that she has had the privilege and honor to portray a variety of characters in her career and being a ‘Diva’ was one of them.
“.It’s just one tool in the belt that is my 19 year career. Diva, First Lady, Knockout, Manager, Mother, CEO, Agent of Change… 7 well established characters, each with the accolades, education, and experience to back it up. Each company had a flavor. Each story a unique impetus. Every management style an appetite to nourish. It’s a game or a fight, a strategy or a political mind fuck, a manipulation or a manifesto. Doesn’t matter the method or the modus operandi.
“The why is all that matters. I love to help the next generation and I need to feed my family. We are not one phenomenon and as a 41 year old mother. The last thing I am is a sheep mewing into that last good night.
