Ilja Dragunov has his sights set on potentially facing Gunther at WrestleMania.
Dragunov and Gunther (then known as WALTER) had two classic matches during the latter’s time in NXT. Gunther has since moved to the main roster, while Dragunov remains in NXT.
Speaking on the Hall of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore, Dragunov was asked to name the opponent he would potentially want to face at WrestleMania. The former NXT UK star responded by naming Gunther.
“It must be Gunther. It must be him,” Ilja Dragunov said. “There is no other choice. This is destiny. There is no other match that makes people feel this whole dimension of emotions that we both can produce. Just because we’re directly opposites. There’s not one person that has taught me more in my entire professional career.
“There’s not one person that pushed me more in my entire professional career, and there’s no one person that I can have a better match with on such a high level as WrestleMania. It is impossible because we have both the opposites, but we are kind of bound and need to be connected to create something that people have never seen before and can reinvent this special thing every time again, especially on a stage like this.”
Gunther is the reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion, and he is currently featured on WWE RAW.
At NXT No Mercy, Ilja Dragunov will challenge Carmelo Hayes for the NXT Championship. WrestleZone will have coverage of the show as it airs on September 30.
