MJF Chokes Out Samoa Joe, Retains AEW World Title At AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam

MJF is still the AEW World Champion.

The main event of AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam saw MJF defend his AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe. For the champ, it was a match seven years in the making after Joe shoved MJF into a wall backstage at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn in 2016.

Throughout the first half of the bout, Joe took advantage of the size difference and also targeted MJF’s injured neck. At one point, Joe dropped MJF with a Death Valley Driver on the apron. He followed that by slamming MJF through a table at ringside. Joe then hit a piledriver on the exposed concrete of the arena floor. Back inside the ring, MJF mustered up enough energy to flatten Joe with a Liger Bomb.

MJF attempted to use his Dynamite Diamond Ring, but the ref caught him and tossed it out. Joe trapped MJF in the clutch, which prompted Adam Cole to run down and pump him up in order to escape.

Referee Paul Turner then got knocked out of the ring, which allowed MJF to choke Joe with his wrist tape. Joe passed out, leading to the referee calling the match in MJF’s favor.

Afterward, Joe shoved Cole but then offered a handshake to MJF. They ultimately shook hands before Joe exited. A trainer then checked on MJF’s neck before MJF and Cole celebrated to close out the show.
