The Young Bucks discuss re-signing with AEW.
On August 2, All Elite Wrestling confirmed that The Elite (The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and Hangman Page) re-signed with the company. As part of their new deals, Omega and the Young Bucks will remain Executive Vice Presidents.
In a clip of the upcoming episode of Swerve City Podcast, the Young Bucks discussed re-signing with AEW. Swerve Strickland asked the duo whether they thought NBA contracts could make their way into wrestling. Matt and Nick noted that they just signed one.
Matt Jackson: “We just signed one today, right?”
Nick Jackson: “It’s funny when you say that. When we signed it, we were like, ‘This is like an NBA-level contract.’ That’s pretty crazy.”
Nick noted that it wasn’t Jaylen Brown-level money. He then recalled how, years ago, he bragged to Scott Hall about making six figures, and the legend told him to think about making seven figures.
Matt went on to state that he can see the economy of wrestling getting healthier, and he pointed to AEW being a factor in that.
Nick also explained that WWE being hot helps them, while Matt pointed out that the threat of stars jumping from one company is beneficial as well.
When Nick stated that the idea of seeing wrestlers jump from one place to another is exciting, Matt admitted that they weren’t sure they would re-sign. He stated that all four members of The Elite negotiated together.
Matt Jackson: “Honestly, we didn’t know. We talked about how we just signed these contracts. I’m sure a lot of these fans, I’m sure they’re thinking, ‘Oh, how unsurprising. The Elite re-sign.’ Bro, we didn’t even know we were gonna re-sign. We had no idea. We knew, not just the two of us, Hangman and Kenny, the four of us, we negotiated together as a team, which I don’t know if it’s ever really been done.”
After Nick stated that the group agreed to stick together, Matt said that the votes didn’t always line up, as the members voted differently.
Matt Jackson: “The votes did not line up every time. We said majority wins on this. There was a lot of emotions in the last year. So one day, this person’s voting to leave, this person’s voting to go. We weren’t even on the same page the whole time. It was crazy.”
Nick then revealed that he had to talk Matt out of retirement at some point during the negotiation process.
Nick Jackson: There was many times where Matt just said, ‘I have enough. I’m ready to just retire’ I had to talk him out of that. I talked him out of retirement.
Matt explained that he had been toying with the idea, but Nick encouraged him to at least get one more big contract.
At the end of the clip, Nick stated that they had signed long-term deals, so they would be in AEW for a long time to come.
