Wes Lee: My NXT North American Title Run Meant The World To Me

Wes Lee reflects on his run as NXT North American Champion.

Lee won the title at NXT Halloween Havoc and defended it many times. Lee was set to defend the championship against Mustafa Ali at NXT Great American Bas. However, he lost the gold when “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio beat him on the July 18 episode of WWE NXT.

Speaking on Under The Ring, Lee commented on his loss to Mysterio.

“It’s hard to say [what’s next.] Right now, I’m just really focused on getting my championship back so o can be a part of the Great American Bash, honestly. Right now, I’m at a loss for words. This is not an outcome that I was expecting.

“I was prepared to go against Mustafa Ali at the Great American Bash, and Dominik Mysterio derailed that. I’m still trying to wrap my mind around it. I don’t know how I let it happen, honestly. I’m upset with myself, if that’s the proper way of saying it.”

Mysterio subsequently defended the title on the following episodes of WWE RAW and SmackDown.

Wes Lee’s Record-Breaking Reign

Wes Lee then reflected on his record-breaking reign as NXT North American Champion. He made it clear that being a fighting champion meant the world to him.

“It meant a lot. That was the staple of my reign,” Wes Lee said. “I wanted to compete against the best any time, any place, anywhere. I made sure that I prepared myself for that because I never knew when the next challenge was gonna be. Especially once the open challenges started to happen. Once the open challenges happened, I needed to always be on my toes because I did not know what opponent was gonna be standing across the ring from me.

“Towards the latter part of my reign, the opponents that really stepped up and made their claim for my North American Championship were deserving. Maybe I got a little bit too overzealous in taking the challenge before the match at the Great American Bash. But yeah. Competing against the best was the forefront of my driving force. Being the North American Champion meant the world to me. It was my first singles championship, and I wanted it to be special.”

Lee noted that being able to showcase himself in a new way meant a lot to him. He then emphasized his mission to regain the gold.

“Every single opponent that I had, I was really able to level up in a way and showcase myself in a way that many people never really got a chance to see me, and it meant a lot for me to be able to do it that way. This championship run is very near and dear to my heart.”
