Timothy Thatcher discusses his looming return to Major League Wrestling.
At MLW Never Say Never on July 8, Thatcher will face “Hot Sauce” Tracy Williams. In recent months, Thatcher has been competing for Pro Wrestling NOAH. He has also competed at several independent shows in the United States, and he made a one-off appearance for AEW, as he faced Bryan Danielson on the February 1 episode of AEW Dynamite.
Speaking with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Thatcher previewed the match and promised to be himself, as he stated that he’s not good at being anyone else. He highlighted his unique persona and noted that he does things his way.
“I’m doing it the way I think it should,” Thatcher said. “If it doesn’t make me a superstar, that’s O.K. That’s not why I’m here.”
Thatcher made it clear that, in his mind, victory is the primary focus, as his goal is not to make people sing his theme song. Instead, he wants to make the viewers feel something, and while that approach might not play to a mass audience, it still makes an impact.
“The ones I looked up to, the task of victory was their focus—not who had the prettier outfit or the coolest catchphrase,” Thatcher said. “I’m not here for people to sing along. I’m here to make them feel something. That doesn’t always play to a mass audience, but for those it plays to, it sticks. That means more to me.”
Ahead of his match with Williams, Thatcher shared his thoughts on his opponent and noted that that have a similar mindset, so the bout will be a competition.
“We have a shared mindset, and we can deliver something different: straightforward pro wrestling that is violent and aggressive,” he said. “This is going to be a competition.”
Thatcher then detailed his goals as a wrestler; he emphasized that he has to be himself, as doing anything else would be a disservice to all of the hard work throughout his long road to this point.
“All I can be is me,” Thatcher said. “If I didn’t do it that way, it would be a disservice to all the hard work I’ve put in—and a disservice to all the people who helped me along the way with their time, effort, and knowledge.
“I’m a big punk rock fan. You play the music you want to play. If the audience comes, great. If they don’t, that’s O.K., too.”
