Shawn Spears shares his thoughts on AEW‘s tour of Canada and teases the return of “The Chairman.”
AEW is currently touring Canada; the trip began with the June 24 episode of AEW Collision and stretches through the July 15 episode of the show. AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door, multiple episodes of AEW Dynamite and Collision are all part of the tour.
Speaking with Giancarlo Aulino for VIBE 105 Sports, Spears discussed AEW’s tour of Canada and emphasized that he was excited about his homecoming.
“This was in the works for a long time. So to be there from the very beginning and now get a chance to not only go to Canada, because we were in Canada last year in October, but to actually do an official tour of Canada, now we kind of get to hopefully spoil the Canadian wrestling fans the way we want to. So we’re not not going to one city, we’re going to multiple, so there’s multiple chances to come out and see us.
“For me, selfishly as a Canadian, it’s the greatest thing in the world. Dorothy said it best, there no place like home, and I believe he every word of that. There is no place like home for me. To come home and do a couple shows, to stack those shows back to back, that’s not only massive to me as a wrestling fan, but as a professional wrestler, after 21 years, it gets me horrifically, if that’s even the way to put it, excited to do this. It’s awesome. Wrestling is the best.”
Spears went on to note that his career is winding down, so the trip home is even more special, as he doesn’t know if it’s the last time he’ll get to do it in his career as an active wrestler.
Later in the interview, Spears reflected on his run as “The Chairman” and stated that the persona was just hibernating. He teased that fans will see him swing chairs again very soon, possibly on AEW’s current tour.
“The Chairman is not gone, I will say that,” Spears said. “The Chairman is just hibernating, we’ll say, for a season. He will be back, you will see him again. I’ll be swinging chairs again very, very soon. I might even swing it during this Canadian tour. Who knows?”
