Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn made history at WWE WrestleMania 39.
In the main event of WrestleMania 39, Owens and Zayn challenged The Usos (Jimmy & Jey Uso) for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. The match marked the culmination of a lengthy rivalry, as Owens had been feuding with The Usos through his rivalry with The Bloodline for months. Zayn had been mixed up in the conflict as a member of The Bloodline and a long-time friend of Owens.
After Zayn turned on the stable at WWE Royal Rumble, and Owens eventually joined forces with him to wage war with The Usos, setting the stage for a buzzworthy clash at WrestleMania 39.
The match between the two duos headlined the show, marking the first time a match for the tag team championship main-evented WrestleMania. Owens and Zayn have plenty of history, as they teamed up together for years on the independent scene. They acknowledged the past by having logos that paid tribute to Pro Wrestling Guerrilla on their gear.
The two teams battled it out in a thrilling main event, and the momentum swung back and forth. Owens got slammed through the broadcast table, seemingly taking him out of action. Zayn persevered and took the fight to the champions by himself until Owens recovered. The former WWE Universal Champion made the hot tag and cleared house. In the end, Owens dropped Jimmy with a Stunner, and Zayn hit three Helluva Kicks to clinch the win.
Owens and Zayn embraced, and they emotionally celebrated their victory to conclude the first night of WrestleMania 39.
The Usos had been the champions for 623 days. They won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship by defeating Rey and Dominik Mysterio at WWE Money in the Bank 2021. The duo later beat Randy Orton and Matt Riddle to win the RAW Tag Team Championship on the May 20, 2022 episode of WWE SmackDown.
