TNT Champion Powerhouse Hobbs says he won’t take his foot off the gas; instead, he intends to make sure that nobody can catch him.
Hobbs has been with AEW since 2020, and he gradually climbed the ladder until he reached new heights when he won the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match on the March 1 episode of AEW Dynamite. Hobbs then defeated Wardlow to win the TNT Championship on the March 8 episode of AEW Dynamite.
In an interview with Denise Salcedo, Hobbs reflected on his TNT Championship victory and noted that he didn’t believe he was winning the title until it was actually in his hands. He stated that representing the company has always been his goal, and now that he has a championship, he has a higher standard, and he intends to step up even more from here on out.
“For me, I don’t believe anything until it actually happens,” Hobbs said. “You can say something’s gonna happen 1,000 times, but until it actually happens, then I’ll believe it. I didn’t believe I was winning the belt until my arm was raised and the belt was in my hands. So that whole reaction, what you saw on TV, was 100% real.
“As far as being one of the faces of the company now, it’s something that I’ve always wanted, and I believe, whether you have championship gold or not, you need to represent the company to the fullest. That’s what I’ve been doing since day one. The only difference now is that I have championship gold. I have a higher standard. I have to not take my foot off the petal, so that means training harder, studying harder, asking more questions, taking care of business in the ring, being more aggressive, and just taking everything up 100%.”
Hobbs was also asked to describe some of the challenges he faced while he fought for his spot. He emphasized the importance of being patient and maximizing any opportunity he got, whether it was on AEW Dark or AEW Dynamite. Hobbs then made it clear that, following his title win, he’s going to keep his foot on the gas to make sure that nobody can catch him.
“Being patient. Ever since I’ve had children, I’ve learned that I have to be patient [laughs], so that helps out a lot,” Hobbs said. “For me, it’s just making the most of any moment that you have, whether you have a match on Elevation or you have a match on Dark, whether it’s a match on Dynamite or Rampage, you have to make the most of any moment because you’re not guaranteed anything in this business, so it’s just making the best of every moment I’ve had.
“I truly feel that every big television match I’ve had or pay-per-view match I’ve had, I’ve stood out, I was remembered, and that I knocked it out the park, so it eventually paid off. So now, I can’t take my foot off the gas. I can’t slow up because there’s always gonna be somebody that’s in my rearview mirror, and I can’t afford to let anybody catch up to me.”
Hobbs successfully defended the TNT Championship against Penta El Zero Miedo on the March 25 episode of AEW Rampage.
