Christopher Daniels discusses AEW‘s relationship with Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide.
AEW stars Tay Melo and Sammy Guevara were pulled from an AAA show where they were scheduled to defend the AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship. Plus, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that AEW CEO Tony Khan was upset when AAA booked Dragon Lee, who was bound for WWE, to beat FTR for the AAA Tag Team Championship in December.
In an interview with Wrestling Inc., Daniels, AEW’s Head of Talent Relations, discussed the company’s relationship with AAA, as some reports have indicated that it has been strained in recent months. He stated that Khan and AAA booker recently had a meeting, and the two sides are in a good place now.
“Actually, I feel like it’s in a good position right now,” Daniels said. “Konnan and Tony Khan recently had a meeting and tried to suss all that out, and I feel like we’re in a good position. We’re in a good place right now, obviously, because I’m going to AAA to wrestle. So yeah, I feel like whatever miscommunications or misunderstandings, whatever that was, I feel like that’s in the past and we’re going to move forward and not dwell on that and try and be available. Each promotion is trying to be available for the other as its schedule permits.”
Daniels also shared his thoughts on the looming AEW debut of AAA star El Hijo Del Vikingo, who will make his AEW debut when he faces Kenny Omega on the March 22 episode of AEW Dynamite. He praised both competitors and noted that he believes it’s a match that fans have wanted to see for a long time.
The veteran then discussed the process of booking the match, as he noted that AEW has wanted to book Vikingo for a while now, but the logistics have not lined up until now. Daniels noted that the match against Omega is an opportunity to introduce him to a broader audience.
“Well, I feel like the desire to have Vikingo as part of our show has been in the works for a while,” Daniels said. “It’s just been a matter of logistics. The demand for him is strong. We don’t want to run him to death and schedule’s finally permitted and here we are. So, I mean it’s a great opportunity to expose Vikingo to a broader audience in the US. He’s on fire right now across the independent scene. Everybody knows him from his stuff in Mexico and I think this is the first of what could be many opportunities for him in the United States.”
When asked about a potential increase in the presence of luchadors in AEW or ROH, Daniels noted that it’s possible when the opportunities come up and the schedules permit.
