Mercedes Moné says nobody knows the story about why she left WWE.
Moné, formerly known as Sasha Banks, walked out of WWE during the May 16 episode of WWE RAW alongside her tag team partner Naomi. The duo were stripped of the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship and suspended indefinitely. Moné ultimately left WWE and made her NJPW debut at Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4. She then defeated KAIRI to win the IWGP Women’s Championship at NJPW Battle in the Valley.
Speaking at Planet Comicon 2023 (via COOLTOY), Moné was asked about her WWE exit and whether she had considered returning to the company the way Dakota Kai and others went back. She stated that no one knows the story about why she left WWE, and she won’t stay anything about it.
“First of all, nobody knows the story,” Moné said. “You don’t know the story. You’re reading whatever you want to read and believing whatever you want to believe. Nobody knows the story because I haven’t said anything, and I’m not going to say anything because that’s just the classy boss that I am, the CEO.”
Moné then stated that Kai and others followed their dreams by returning to WWE, whereas her dream was to wrestle in Japan. She noted that, when she left WWE, she needed a change, and it was time to begin a new chapter.
“But one thing, i”It’s up to them, it’s up Dakota and everybody else that wants to come back,” Moné said. “That’s great for them, that’s awesome. That’s their dream, but I went after mine, which is going to Japan. You have to follow your heart and follow your soul and follow your dreams, and this was always, always, always a dream of mine that I never got to accomplish.
“So as I’m growing in my career, I’ve been in the WWE for almost ten years, I had to have a change. I had to feel something different in my heart and my soul, so I had to go after a whole new dream and a whole new chapter and a whole new destiny for me. This is where I want to be, and this is what I want to make happen for me. So that’s it. This is what I’m going for. This is my dream.”
