Thunder Rosa wants to remind fans that their hateful words on social media negatively impact wrestlers’ mental health.
On this morning’s episode of Busted Open Radio, Dave LaGreca and Thunder Rosa spoke in-depth about the toxicity of social media and how words from fans can hurt the performers who step into the ring for our entertainment.
“There’s a reason why I have somebody managing my social media, especially Twitter. I don’t have Twitter on my phone, like at all,” Thunder Rosa said. “Every time I get the stuff I have, Tony Allen, shout out he’s listening to us in Monterrey, Mexico. He’s the one who reads all that stuff.
“So I can’t imagine how much pressure and how much stuff he’s going through too. Because we work together and we’re colleagues and friends, and he knows how some of this stuff had affected many things in my career. Because somebody said perspective is the truth or something, but it’s not.
“You don’t understand some of the struggles that some of us go through. And I know I’m not the only one who’s gone through this. There’s other female wrestlers too, that have actually disconnected or actually have taken time off because it’s been really detrimental to their mental health. And it hurts because I had to make a decision for my health. I want to return completely healthy.
“I don’t want to get reinjured. I get there. I do too much, it’s something else because I didn’t train properly to get back in the ring. I’ve been gone for seven months. It’s not like I was gone for two months. It’s been seven months. So it’s retraining everything in your body, jumping, landing.
“The most important is the landing part because we are like, and I’m gonna get into the ladder match that I saw on Wednesday. There was moments in that ladder match, and I can tell you, my heart dropped as I was doing commentating. Because one millimeter that they landed the wrong, they could have been paralyzed. I’m not talking about having a concussion only. I mean, that’s very serious too. But being paralyzed for one second, one mishap. We’re not doing Zumba here, guys.
“We’re putting our bodies through hell every single night we step in the ring. So that’s why it’s so important when you come and watch a show before you say something stupid and ignorant about a wrestler because they quote-unquote botch a move. Think about how dangerous it could have been. Some people have broken their necks during the matches.
“Bryan Danielson, all the concussions that he received, a perfect example now that he’s gonna be on Revolution. Things happen in a split of a second. And for people to be so disgusting and say things that you know, ‘Oh, they’re faking it.’ or ‘Oh, they just don’t want to wrestle.’
“No, I wish you would have been where we’ve been and gone through the hell that we’ve been through and questioning ourselves when we’re like, damn, am I gonna be able to be as good as I was when I left? It’s a lot.
“So we have to be, regardless of all that sort of circumstances, we have to show kindness because that’s the one thing we have left is showing kindness to everyone. Because if we pinpoint and be like, ‘Oh my god, I’m gonna go in and respond to everyone.’ There’s not gonna do anything for us. So yeah, you just got me fired up.”
