Cody Rhodes: Bringing Back The Winged Eagle Title Is A Pipe Dream, But It’d Be Fun

Cody Rhodes says it’d be fun to bring back the Winged Eagle Championship.

The Winged Eagle was WWE’s world title from 1988-1998, and it remains synonymous with that era of WWE history. “The American Nightmare” has previously expressed his interest in having the title come back. He recently posted a picture of the title on social media, leading many fans to wonder whether Rhodes was teasing its return.

Speaking on the February 1 episode of WWE’s The Bump, Rhodes was asked to describe why the title is special to him, and he recalled how it was connected to the WWE he watched when he was a kid. Rhodes brought up his social media post and noted that, rather than calling his shot, he simply shared the image because he has a pipe dream to have the title come back.

“Through my youth, the WWE that I was watching was really synonymous with the Winged Eagle. I think there’s a lot of people who love the Winged Eagle, the design. Some people like the big eagle, but the Winged Eagle was the one for me. Today’s design with the giant W is also incredibly special because it’s a walking billboard for the promotion, but it was just a pipe dream. I post that and I don’t want people to think I’m calling a shot. I don’t want people to think I’m going into business for myself. The reality is, I was able to change the Intercontinental Championship once before, which seemed absurd.

“If I’m able to get to the finish line, biggest WrestleMania of all time, So-Fi [Stadium], in Hollywood, if I’m able to get to the finish line, and get my hands on these things that have eluded my family up til now, it just would be kind of a fun, maybe it’s just a pipe dream, maybe it’s just a thought, a glimmer, but it would be fun to just say, let’s just boil them down and bring back the Winged Eagle. Now, listen, this is me just talking. All the titles, it’s the equity within them that makes them special. But just from a design standpoint, I have a lot of love and reverence for that one, and it’s just a little pipe dream. I had the same pipe dream with the Intercontinental Title, and I was lucky enough to make that come to fruition. So follow along because this is where the fun begins.”

Rhodes returned to WWE at WWE Royal Rumble and won the Men’s Royal Rumble to earn a world title shot at WrestleMania. He will challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39.
