Anthony Bowens: The Acclaimed Are Trying To Get ‘That’s Right’ Over Like Steve Austin’s ‘What’

The Acclaimed (Anthony Bowens and Max Caster) are working on a new catchphrase.

Bowens and Caster are one of the most successful homegrown acts in AEW; they have gone from competing on AEW Dark to wrestling in high-profile matches throughout their journey with the company. The duo captured the AEW World Tag Team Championship on AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam in September, as their popularity has sky-rocketed in recent months. Now, the chants for their catchphrases like “Scissor me, Daddy Ass” are some of the loudest reactions of the right.

Speaking on Alison Rosen Is Your New Best Friend, Bowens recalled how their National Scissoring Day segment was particularly special, as everyone in the crowd was chanting along. He noted that he and Caster have several catchphrases, and he described how they drew inspiration from greats like The Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, who have plenty of memorable lines of their own.

“That night, actually I look back a lot because they were there for everything, and it’s a really powerful feeling to scream ‘Everyone loves The Acclaimed’ and you feel everyone screaming it with you,” Bowens said. “I just got goosebumps. It’s so cool. ‘The Acclaimed have arrived’ too, ‘Scissor Me, Daddy Ass’. Now that I’m thinking about it, we have so many catchphrases, which is cool. Max and I always look to people in the past who have been very, very successful. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austins and The Rocks, the Cenas, people who have made the most money in this business.

“We look at a lot of the stuff that they do. It’s always memorable catchphrases. ‘Cause Stone Cold Said So’, ‘Give me a hell yeah,’ and ‘That’s the bottom line.’ The Rock, ‘If you smell what The Rock is cooking’, ‘Finally The Rock has come back.’ ‘It doesn’t matter what your name is.’ You can rattle all these catchphrases off, and then when we look at our body of work, it’s like, ‘Oh, you can do the same thing. ‘Yo, listen.’ ‘The Acclaimed have arrived.’ ‘Scissor me, Daddy Ass.’ ‘Everyone loves The Acclaimed.’ That’s right.’ It’s really cool.”

When asked whether “That’s Right” is one of The Acclaimed’s catchphrases, Bowens stated that they’re working on it, and they want to turn it into something like Austin’s “What?” chant with the crowd.

So we’re working on that one right now,” Bowens said. “Stone Cold had the ‘What?’ He’d say a line and the crowd goes, ‘What?’ We want them crowd now to go, ‘That’s right.’ So I’ll say something, like a list. We’re going grocery shopping, that’s right. To get some watermelon, that’s right. To get some peas. That’s right, and then getting the crowd to do that. We’re gonna keep adding things as we go along just to see what what we can do and how many get over.”

Bowens also highlighted the “beauty” of The Acclaimed as a duo by emphasizing that they share the load. He noted that Caster does the raps for their entrance, but he screams “The Acclaimed have arrived” every night, so it evens out.

“I think the beautify of The Acclaimed is, we are 50-50 in everything,” Bowens said. “So sometimes, in match scenarios, if I’m hurt, banged up, he’ll do a lot of the heavy lifting in the match, and then vice versa. So we kind of pick each other up on those things.

“On the entrance, I would have to say that although he does the rapping, which takes more memorization, the screaming that I do and the headaches end sore throats that I get should be equal to the amount of work that he’s putting into the entrance. Especially when we have shows back to back and I realize I have to scream every single night, it tends to hurt.”
