Davey Richards Has Blown The Forbidden Door Wide Open, Looks Forward To New Orleans Debut

Davey Richards will be in New Orleans for NWA Hard Times 3 but you never know where else he’ll pop up next.

During a recent interview with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard, Davey Richards spoke about his next title defense at NWA Hard Times 3. Richards will defend the MLW National Openweight Championship against Colby Corino, and spoke about sharing the ring with two generations of the Corino family.

“His dad Steve was always a good guy because he was always willing to give, help, teach, offer an opportunity. He was one of the real good ones. There was a lot of people who were more concerned about ‘me’ and he wasn’t like that. I’ve been watching Colby for a long time. I can remember when he was really young because I’m so old. It’ll be really fun.

“I want to say thank you to NWA and MLW because people talk about the Forbidden Door, and I’ve blown that thing wide open, and a lot of it is because of the blessing of MLW to let me do Japan, IMPACT, NWA. It’s been a real blessing. And NWA, there’s tons of things that Billy Corgan, when he gets an idea, he’s throws it and makes it happen. He doesn’t want to sit on the fence. I’m very thankful for the opportunities that they’ve all given me. I did one NWA show here in St. Louis that was just an absolute blast. I’ve actually never wrestled in New Orleans, believe it or not. Yeah, I’ve wrestled in Louisiana, but never actually in New Orleans.”

One other potential “Forbidden Door” opportunity could come in the form of a return to Ring Of Honor. Davey Richards is contracted to MLW but many fans have speculated that he could be a mystery opponent for ROH Champion Chris Jericho. Richards said that this year has taught everyone that anything is possible, noting the similarities in their respective careers.

“It’s so humbling because every week it seems like I’m the one people want to see on there. That’s really humbling. I would love to. I’m always up for competition. Me and Jericho have a lot in common. We both have influence from the Calgary stuff and our career trajectory as far as Japan and stuff, so it would be really good. But you know, there’s bigger powers than me. I’m ungodly thankful for everyone’s support and belief for me to go and do that. We’ll see what happens. That’s the cool thing about wrestling nowadays is it would be more surprising if it didn’t happen than it did because there’s so many cool possibilities that actually come to fruition in wrestling. You never know where I might pop up.”

Davey Richards has spent considerable amounts of time in Ring Of Honor and IMPACT Wrestling, but some fans still see him as an “ROH guy.” Asked if he considers himself to be an IMPACT guy too, as he competed for them against Honor No More at Slammiversary, Richards says his allegiance lies with the promotion he’s working for at the time.

Richards said he owes plenty to his time in Ring Of Honor and he was partial to working for Gabe Sapolsky and Cary Silkin, adding that the American Wolves would not exist without Adam Pearce. Richards still has a great relationship with IMPACT and loves MLW, explaining that he now just wants to make shows better in any way he can.

“I guess to give your answer true credibility, I have to sound arrogant for a minute. I’m not concerned with going and having the best match on the card anymore. I know I can have the best match. I know no one’s going to outwork me, I know that. I’m not concerned with having a good match anymore because, seriously, I was up at 3 o’clock in the morning, couldn’t sleep, and was watching an All-Japan match. I’m consistently studying this when I’m not in the gym. But what my thing is now, is how can I make this show better? How can I make this match better? How can I make this company better, and most of all, how can I make my opponent better?

“So, again, it’s not all about me, more so, wherever I go, I’m that guy. Come November for New Orleans weekend in NWA, like I’m going to be an NWA guy. I’m carrying an MLW title in there as I’m also an MLW guy, but whatever show I’m on or whatever company I’m part of, I want to make that show better. When I was at IMPACT for Slammiversary, I was an IMPACT guy. So it’s one of those things where I want to use my ability and my passion for wrestling to make every company I work for better.”
