The recent match between Athena and Jody Threat has been a source of controversy, and a new report has shined some light on the matter.
Athena faced Threat at the AEW Dark: Elevation tapings in Toronto, and the AEW star wound up working quite aggressively during the contest. On social media, Athena has been criticized for being too stiff in the match.
According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, sources indicated that AEW management approached both women after the match. At one point in the contest, the action became even more physical when Threat reportedly got a little lost and asked Athena what was next, and one source noted that it shouldn’t have gotten to that level. Another source noted that the situation should have been an opportunity to lead by example, rather than allowing the issue to escalate.
Sapp cited those close to Athena, who believed that the match was intended to go in that direction because she worked heel to respond to Threat’s popularity. The report also noted that there hasn’t been word of a confrontation between the two women after the match.
Other sources indicated that Threat didn’t complain about the way the bout went down, and she hasn’t spoken about the situation publicly. She’s said to not be “big” on the attention that stems from these situations, as she aims to keep her head down and avoid politics instead.
