Brody King wants to prove that he’s the biggest and baddest competitor in NJPW STRONG, and he views a clash with Minoru Suzuki as the best way to do so.
The two brawlers will collide at NJPW Capital Collision on May 14, and King believes the match is a fitting way to test himself.
In an interview with Innes McVey of Inside The Ropes, King previewed the bout by explaining that facing Suzuki is the next step in his effort to become a “big, bad” fighter in NJPW.
“I feel like as far as the big bad guys in New Japan, he’s probably one of the biggest,” said King. “So if I wanna be big, bad Brody King, I gotta go up against the biggest and baddest. I went through Ishii, unfortunately I did not catch the win there, but I feel I had a hard-fought match with him. And now it’s time to test myself against Minoru Suzuki.”
King is also signed to AEW, and while the company has a lot in common with NJPW, the two promotions are quite different. He explained that NJPW’s product is sport-based, as the storytelling is mostly done within the matches themselves.
“They just, within reason, they let you kind of take an idea and see where you can go with it,” said King. ” I feel like New Japan is different in a way where it’s very much about the wrestling, it’s very much sport-based. Most storylines happen within the wrestling ring and it’s up to you to convey those stories and to have these matches to where people wanna see Brody King versus Minoru Suzuki.”
Crossovers between AEW and NJPW are the talk of the town right now, as the upcoming “Forbidden Door” supershow promises to deliver matches between the promotion’s top stars. As someone who works for both companies, King is looking forward to mixing it up, and he stated that he’d like to see the House of Black stable compete in NJPW, either in Japan or on the STRONG stateside brand.
“I would love for the House of Black to be in New Japan, whether it be in Japan or here for Strong, I think that that would be a really cool thing to happen,” said King. “And I feel like there’s so many matchups that can happen that would really blow people away.”
