Young Rock has quickly become a smash hit for NBC, as the show chronicles Dwayne Johnson’s rise to stardom. The newest episode, which will air on May 3, will tackle a particularly meaningful subject — The Rock‘s in-ring debut. Titled “Corpus Christi,” the episode will feature Johnson’s first encounters with WWE stars like “Stone Cold Steve Austin”, Triple H, and The Undertaker.
In an interview with TheWrap, Hiram Garcia and Brian Gewirtz, who wrote the installment alongside Johnson, described the process of capturing such a special topic. Gewirtz, a former WWE head writer, made it clear that the team was excited about this chapter of The Rock’s story, and they were happy with how it turned out.
“This is something we’ve been looking forward to for a very long time to be able to come together and do this,” said Gewitrz. “We got some great support and guidance from our creators of the show Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang. It was a really seamless process and we’re happy with how it turned out.”
Garcia noted that Johnson was a priceless resource, as he was able to precisely recall his interactions with the superstars, which helped the show deliver an authentic recreation.
“There’s so much story to tell in that limited space, but Dwayne’s got a great memory when it comes to those moments – especially these moments that are so pivotal for him – so he’s a great resource for us,” said Garcia.
In this regard, Gewirtz highlighted the scene with The Undertaker, as it was transcribed directly from Johnson based on his own memory. While many fans are buzzing about the show’s depiction of legends like The Undertaker, Gewirtz was also determined to shine the spotlight on a lesser-known character.
“Every draft we worked on and we turned in, I only had one thing going in the back of my mind, which is make sure Mantar stays in the show,” Gewirtz said. “Mantar is in this episode.”
Fans won’t have to wait long to see Mantaur on broadcast television, as Young Rock airs Tuesdays on NBC.
