Deonna Purrazzo is confident that the “real” Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion will stand tall when she eventually faces the interim champion.
“The Virtuosa” won the gold by dethroning Rok-C in January, but ROH entered a new era when Tony Khan acquired the promotion in March. He rolled with the previously announced Supercard of Honor event, which was set for April 1. In the weeks leading up to the show, Purrazzo was not announced for the card, and Khan ultimately announced a bout to crown the Inetrim ROH Women’s World Champion. Mercedes Martinez won the title by defeating Willow Nightingale, and Khan announced that there will eventually be a championship unification match.
In an interview with MuscleManMalcolm, when asked about Martinez’s victory, the IMPACT Wrestling star expressed her confidence that she will beat the veteran because she defeated her the last time they faced off.
“You know what, Mercedes is tough competitor, I’ve been in the ring with her a dozen times,” said Purrazzo. “The last time I was in the ring with Mercedes Martinez, she was tapping out, ‘I quit, I quit, I quit’, to ‘The Virtuosa’. So whenever there’s a unification match or she wants to step in the ring with the real Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion, then the same result is gonna happen.”
Purrazzo went on to confirm that she was unable to make ROH Supercard of Honor due to her commitments with IMPACT; the promotion had two events on the same night as ROH’s first show of the year. She then looked forward to her eventual match with Martinez and encouraged fans to do the same.
“We talked about it, we had our IMPACT show, we had two shows, so I’m under contract with IMPACT, so there’s not much I can do” said Purrazzo. ” My hands are kinda tied. I would have loved to defend the championship. But I think big things are to come. It was announced that down the road I would wrestle the winner of the match and it was Mercedes, so I think everyone can just cool the brakes a little bit, calm down, stop with the negativity, and just realize that Mercedes and I are gonna kill it whenever we get in the ring, and the real Ring of Honor Women’s Champion will be and still ‘The Virtuosa.'”
Khan previously stated that he was in talks with IMPACT about Purrazzo’s status ahead of Supercard of Honor. His comments are available here.
It’s currently unclear when the aforementioned championship unification match will take place.
