Santos Escobar aimed to win the NXT Title 18 years to the day Eddie Guerrero won the WWE Title, but he had Bron Breakker standing in his way. Both Escobar and Breakker main evented NXT Vengeance Day with their title match and their action in the ring made clear that stakes were high. Santos showed his in-ring savvy as he kept the champ grounded with submission holds to wear the champion down.
Escobar clearly told Breakker that this is his time, but it wasn’t. Breakker raged up and fought back against the challenger to down Escobar with a tilt-a-whirl slam. Both Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde meddled in the business before Dolph Ziggler himself charged in to superkick the champion. Breakker still kicked out and Ziggler was outraged. Thankfully for Bron, Ciampa came out to drag Dolph off.

Escobar nailed Breakker with a tornado DDT and tried to land an Eddie frog splash, but Breakker thwarted all that with a spear and a gorilla press slam for the emphatic 1-2-3 and to end cap his first title defense.
