Britt Baker currently reigns supreme as the AEW Women’s World Champion, but she’ll be tested when she puts the title on the line against Tay Conti at AEW Full Gear. The challenger has risen up the ranks and gained plenty of fans in the process, and Baker knows that she’s in for a fight at the pay-per-view on Novembr 13.
In an interview with Scott Fishman of TV Insider, AEW’s resident dentist previewed her looming clash with Conti. Baker spoke highly of her opponent and called her one of the top stars in AEW, but “the D.M.D. era” will continue after this bout nonetheless.
“When it comes to fighter instincts, I don’t think I’ve ever faced anyone on Tay Conti’s level,” said Baker. “She can literally drop anybody. But this is professional wrestling, my reign, and my division. I’m happy to give her a shot at the belt, but it’s my era right now, the D.M.D. era.
“The story Tay Conti has with NXT not going her way. It wasn’t her grand stage, where now it is. She is one of the top stars in AEW. She gets one of the biggest reactions from fans when she comes out. It’s still my reign and my ring, and it’s going to stay that way.”
Baker’s title defenses continue to be high-profile contests; she main-evented the inaugural episode of AEW Rampage, which emanated from “Brittsburgh”, and her match with Ruby Soho went on last at the historic AEW Dynamite: Grand Slam show. When asked, Baker shared her belief that these main event opportunities are even more impactful than having an all-women’s pay-per-view.
“As empowering as EmPowerrr is, I think it’s more empowering we’re given the platform to the main event all these television shows,” said Baker. “To main event Dynamite. To main event Rampage. When the women main event a men’s show, it has a little extra satisfaction.”
