Mickie James tasted sweet, sweet, sweet victory at Bound For Glory.
Mickie James was on Busted Open Radio on Monday and talked about what her IMPACT Wrestling Knockouts Championship win at Bound For Glory meant to her. Mickie said that she didn’t originally think it’d register as it did, but said it was a great moment for many reasons.
“It feels so good. And honestly, I didn’t think it would matter as much to me as it did in the sense, because I have been a champion several times and I’ve had such a tenured career, and I think we go, ‘Oh, I don’t need the championship, I’ve done so much,’ so there was nothing sweeter than winning the [IMPACT Knockouts] Championship. I hadn’t won a championship in eight years, my last championship was my championship at IMPACT that I lost against ODB, so when I think about that I’m going, ‘wow, it’s kinda a long time’ and I’ve done a lot — I’ve done a lot, but not really for me, you know what I mean? So it was a great moment,” Mickie said. “It was a really, really great moment and it was powerful and it felt good, and it felt good to shut up Deonna finally.”
Asked if her latest title win meant a little more given how the last few years played out, Mickie agreed and said the last few years saw her try to do more for others, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t “go” anymore.
“It was so special. It really, really was so special… I’m going to get emotional, but that’s what I meant about in these last eight years and all of the things I’ve done. I’ve done some cool stuff but for the most part, it was for everybody else. I didn’t really do anything for myself, and that was a choice and I was so happy to be back where I was. I thought that would happen for me so then I could do whatever because there’s just so much more layers to it now and then I leave [WWE] and how I left, all of the things, I did Empowerrr, I was able to head up Empowerrr and that was really cool, but then to come back to [IMPACT] and have a chance at having the championship again, I go, ‘Wow, this is actually a real chance to have a shot at the championship again.’ Saturday was beautiful.
“I’m here in Vegas, people were behind me, and to have that real love behind me and for them to be on fire and to be with it all night, the ‘this is awesome’ chants,” Mickie explained, “and there’s no doubt Deonna is probably one of the best wrestlers I’ve ever been in the ring with, not just of today, but legit I’ve ever been in the ring with. She’s incredible. Even with [her] coming to my house [for the barn brawl segment] and doing all of the dirty crap, she’s incredible out there and I knew I was going to be up for a fight. I think that was a major question from the audience, ‘Mickie’s a legend, but can she hang with someone like Deonna?’ The answer is yes, I can hang with someone like Deonna because there wouldn’t be a Deonna without Mickie James, that’s the reality — and not just me, I don’t put just myself, there’s been [other legends] — but I could still go. What happened was I just became less selfish and started doing more for other people than doing more for myself. This one wasn’t a selfish move, but it felt good. It felt good to win again and remind myself that I can win and it’s OK to be awesome, and I don’t have to apologize for it. So yeah, it was good.”

As she mentioned herself, Mickie’s title win at Bound For Glory was her first in eight years (May 23, 2013) but it is notable for multiple other reasons, including that she is now a 10-time women’s world champion across WWE and IMPACT.
