CM Punk is excited to see what Daniel Bryan does next in his career no matter where he ends up working, but still says fans shouldn’t expect to see AJ Lee return to the squared circle.
CM Punk was a guest on WFAN’s Moose and Maggie show on Thursday and was asked about the potential of seeing his wife, AJ Lee, ever returning to the ring. Lee hasn’t wrestled since March 2015, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating that she might one day make a return to pro wrestling.
Punk had previously told the New York Post that she couldn’t return to the ring because of her neck issues. Asked again about her status, Punk once again cited her neck issues and said that even if she was open to the idea of coming back, it’s not something that’s on her mind because of how busy AJ is with her other projects.
“I don’t [think she wants to do it], and it’s because she’s a teeny, tiny person and she’s got a bad neck. She wrestled—I think the shelf life for females in wrestling, wrestling a full schedule is a lot shorter, it’s a lot smaller than men. She, I think, is so focused on what’s she’s doing now—writing, screenplays, working on a million different projects and being pulled in so many different directions,” Punk explained. “I think she’d maybe be receptive to the idea of coming back, but it’s like that can’t even enter her vocabulary right now because she’s so focused on the movie scripts and the TV adaptation of her book that she’s working on right now.”
Asked by Maggie as a follow-up about Daniel Bryan and if it’s a “foregone conclusion” that he ends up in AEW, Punk initially remained silent, but after a brief pause (and jokes from the co-hosts about his silence giving something away), Punk explained why he’s excited to see what Bryan does either way.
“Listen, the seven years I was gone, if you told me, ‘Who’s the one guy that could get you back to wrestling?’ If you could just have one match with them, it would be him. I don’t know if that answers your question or not, but… that guy was in the WrestleMania main event, I don’t know, six months ago? So that would be a huge acquisition and I think he could do, just like me, everything he wants to do. And for a guy like him and me, pro wrestling is art,” Punk said. “This is our art, right? Other people paint with brushes, this is our art and very much in the footsteps of a Bret Hart, so if he does show up, I’m excited to see what he does. If he doesn’t, I’m excited to see what he does elsewhere.”
