Sometimes it’s all about conflict in professional wrestling.
WWE NXT star Samoa Joe recently appeared on the ‘Out Of Character with Ryan Satin’ podcast and discussed how the advice he gives the younger generation about how to broach the subject of approaching conflict inside of a storyline.
“I tell a lot of guys as they’re coming up in their career, spend a considerable amount of time observing conflict, even if it’s unpleasant, if you want to be apart of this life. You have to understand what the world sees as a conflict, what they see as being threatening and dangerous and take those aspects and take them over into your character. I think there’s in-depth studies that need to be done on what we do and I’m sure people have written their graduation thesis on it but there’s definitely an aspect to it and those high level, really, really cerebral wrestlers have embraced that and found a joy in it. I think The Miz is a great example of that. Anywhere I’ve ever seen him perform, he has an innate ability and even on a personal level, if someone can pluck anybody’s strings, it’s that guy. He just finds a way to do it and gets it done.”
Joe then quickly delves into the importance of wrestlers using conflict to illicit a response from fans.
“I think it’s a little simpler than what people take it for, there’s certain things that people have said to you in a certain way that I think would universally piss off anybody. It’s just something that I’ve picked up an learned from watching the greats, from watching those who were able to draw in an audience. It’s an ongoing experience, I’m learning a lot on my journey.”
