Kyle O’Reilly has spent most of his time in NXT as a member of The Undisputed Era. Since the group broke up earlier this year, O’Reilly has been making a name for himself as a singles competitor, and he wants to reach the pinnacle of NXT.
In an interview with TV Insider, O’Reilly talked about the obstacles he has faced during into a singles wrestler. He also reflected on the differences between his time in the group and his current run by himself.
“It has certainly been challenging,” said O’Reilly. “I’ve had singles experience, but this is new for me coming to WWE and NXT. Those singles matches were few and far between. It has definitely put me into the deep end. I’ve grown and evolved because we all have those dreams of becoming a singles champion in WWE. I love tag team wrestling, and I think I’m a good tag team wrestler. But this is something new.”
The former NXT Tag Team Champion also talked about making the transition into someone who now has to talk on his own. Previously, The Undisputed Era was largely voiced by Adam Cole. But now that O’Reilly is by himself, he has to hone his own microphone skills in order to make it big. Thankfully for him, he’s up to the challenge because he learned a lot from watching Cole.
“Just trying to match the intensity of Adam Cole when he is delivering promos,” O’Reilly explained. “For my money, he is one of the best in the business. He has been a huge inspiration to me being a top guy in NXT for as long as he has. Just the way he would deliver has been an inspiration. Being a vocal guy was never a strong point. But it’s new challenges. New opportunities. I am giving it my all.”
O’Reilly’s next opportunity to prove himself will be at NXT TakeOver: In Your House, where he’ll face, Pete Dunne, Johnny Gargano, and NXT Champion Karrion Kross in a huge Fatal 5-Way match. Whether or not he comes out on top is anyone’s guess, but O’Reilly seems to have all the confidence in the world that he’ll make it as a solo star.
