ROH Roundup: Quinn McKay And Angelina Love Preview Their Match, Chelsea Green Teases Next Move

Ring of Honor has an eventful week in store for its fans.

This weekend’s episode of ROH Wrestling will feature two heated grudge matches. The clash between Angelina Love and on-screen personality Quinn McKay has been brewing for several months, and the two women will finally face off the weekend of May 8. For Love, a victory would give her a first-round bye in the upcoming ROH Women’s World Championship Tournament. Meanwhile, McKay will put her hard work in the ROH Dojo to the test and hope to prove that she can hold her own with a former champion. With a win or an otherwise impressive performance, McKay could punch her ticket to the tournament, too.

Plus, The Briscoes will be in action this weekend. Mark and Jay will face the team of Flip Gordon and EC3. The brothers have been respectively feuding with the members of this duo in recent months; whereas Jay defeated EC3 at ROH 19th Anniversary, Gordon walked away victorious in a match with Mark at the pay-per-view. A win in this match would help The Briscoes climb up the ROH World Tag Team Championship rankings, and a loss could lead to even more tension. (The brothers have been at odds recently, even after they tried to get it out of their system with a match on the 500th episode of ROH Wrestling.)

The inaugural Women’s Division Wednesday aired last week, and it showcased four women who might compete in the Women’s World Championship Tournament. Max The Impaler, Rok-C, Hyan and Laynie Luck faced off in tag team action, but the bout ended in a time limit draw. Still, all four women impressed the fans, so it’s worth wondering whether any of them will return to ROH at some point soon.

This week, Vita VonStarr will face longtime veteran Sumie Sakai in the second Women’s Division Wednesday. Sakai is a former Women of Honor World Champion, and she made her ROH debut in 2002. On the other hand, though VonStarr has been featured alongside The Righteous, she hasn’t stepped into the ring yet. But she has competed throughout the independent wrestling scene for promotions like STAR Pro and SWF Live Pro Wrestling.

As previously noted, Lenny Leonard has returned to the company, and he will join the broadcast team for the aforementioned tournament.

Could Chelsea Green participate in the return of women’s wrestling in ROH? Green, one of the most promising free agents in wrestling. stirred the pot on Monday night by expressing her interest in working with ROH, leading some fans to speculate that she could compete in an ROH ring this summer.

Though April is now in the rearview mirror, it’s still important to celebrate the months’ notable successes. On that note, the company’s official website named ROH Pure Champion Jonathan Gresham as the Wrestler of the Month. Gresham picked up an extra special victory on the 500th episode of ROH Wrestling when he retained his title against Jay Lethal in a Pure Rules Match. This win over a former world champion should certainly elevate Gresham’s profile in ROH and beyond.

Elsewhere, on the latest episode of ROH Week By Week, “The Mecca” Brian Johnson delivered a passionate promo and stated that he wants to be remembered as an all-time great in a company where CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, and Samoa Joe, among many others, built the foundation. He then issued an open challenge for a match on this weekend’s episode of ROH Wrestling. He briefly called out everyone from Matt Taven and RUSH to LSG and Dak Draper, so the possibilities are endless.

Johnson is 4-1 in 2021, and he picked up another victory on Week By Week with a win over Ryan Mooney (formerly known as Ryan Nova.)

Lastly, Week By Week offered a look at the rankings, and Dragon Lee sits atop two divisions. He’s the top contender for two titles he never lost. Though Tony Deppen just won the ROH World Television Championship, Lee is fittingly ranked first. He was unable to defend his titles at ROH 19th Anniversary, and Kenny King lost his singles championship to Tracy Williams at the pay-per-view. Additionally, Lee is half of the duo who is ranked first in the tag team division. The Foundation defeated La Bestia Del Ring (Lee’s replacement) and King at the pay-per-view, so it might just be a matter of time before Lee receives the chance to get his gold back.
