Paul Ellering On Making The Legion Of Doom A Worldwide Attraction, The Team’s Disappointing WWE Run

WWE Hall of Famer Paul Ellering recently appeared on UnSKripted with Dr. Chris Featherstone of Sportskeeda. He discussed his time managing the Authors of Pain, his thoughts on the Legion of Doom’s run with WWE and more; highlights include:

On taking the Road Warriors across the world:

“We set up Japan in probably ’84 or ’85, and once we had Japan in our back pocket, we could do anything. We could go to any territory. The only one we couldn’t go to was WWF because Vince wanted to have you committed to him. And we didn’t want to be committed to anything. We wanted to have the whole world as our territory and utilize ourselves the way Andre the Giant was billed, as an attraction.”

On branching away from the Road Warriors and managing the Disciples of Apolcaypse:

“At the time, you know, once you’ve had the car on the road for 15 years, different stuff is gonna happen and at that time, that was probably a good thing to happen because it created interest, and without interest, there’s nothing. And it put the guys in the front again, and we always knew we were gonna get back together, it was just a matter of time. So in the back, we were still, we were family.”

On the Legion Of Doom’s run in WWE:

“Well, to me it was actually kinda disappointing, but when you understand the philosophy of the WWE, you know the writing was probably on the wall before they even got there. Because the WWE has always been a singles big man territory, and they had never pushed tag teams to any great degree.”
