Report: WWE Acquires War Games Rights & Trademark From MLW

Mike Johnson of PW Insider reports that multiple sources within WWE have confirmed that the company has acquired both the rights and trademark for War Games from MLW.

WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes came up with the name and invented the dual steel cage concept which debuted in 1987 for Jim Crockett Promotions and later became an NWA staple. War Games was used by WCW until the company was acquired by the WWE in 2001. WWE did later release a War Games DVD set, but allowed the War Games name to enter into the public domain.

MLW took advantage of the opportunity, used the War Games name in 2003 and successfully filed for copyright in 2007. WWE wanted to use the name back in 2017, but were told they could not due to MLW’s copyright.

According to the report, WWE was able to work out a deal with MLW several months ago and MLW will reportedly not be using the name or concept going forward.
