Nikki Bella is proud of how women are presented in World Wrestling Entertainment ahead of WWE Evolution, but she also thinks they can do better going forward. She pointed towards Ronda Rousey’s recent promo that brought up her relationship with John Cena, and told the NY Post that “we are taking sold old ways and bring it into [Evolution].” It was an angle that drew some criticism for not matching the progressive messaging surrounding the event, and it seems Bella agrees with the complaints. “I definitely hope it changes, and I think it will because I think the women are better than that.”
“I think we can tell empowering stories that have nothing to do with men or how men define us because that’s the point of Evolution,” explained Bella. We define ourselves as women. We want the equality. We don’t want to be defined by our men or our relationships because almost every woman is in a relationship with another wrestler in our industry.”
Nikki went onto state that she understands why it’s a well-worn trope in wrestling, and said that it makes it easy for writers to turn a rivalry personal. Regardless of her complaints, she’s not letting the constant mentions of John Cena bring her down ahead of the card. “I know the hard work that I’ve done to get where I’m at,” said Bella. “I think for me, this is the part where not only do men need to evolve, but women [also need to understand] that just because a woman is successful doesn’t mean it’s because of her man. I think it’s unfair.”
