Mae Young Classic Recap (10/17/18): The Semifinals Are Set

The quarterfinals concluded on tonight’s episode of the Mae Young Classic, as we now have the final four women ready for a shot at glory at WWE Evolution.

Lacey Lane was the ultimate underdog going into her quarterfinal match against the Joshi legend Meiko Satomura but gave a valiant performance matching strikes with her. However, her inexperience did her in as Satomura overpowered her and finished her off with a Death Valley Driver.

Next up was ‘The Virtuoso’ Deonna Purrazzo going up against the Stardom legend Io Shirai in a competitive battle between two familiar foes. Purrazzo would work over the arm throughout the match, coming close on a few occasions in achieving a submission. Io would power through and overcome, putting Purrazzo away with a moonsault to earn her ticket into semis.

Fan favorite Tegan Nox would face the rebellious Rhea Ripley but faced a tragic end when she injured her left knee. Freshly recovered after a torn ACL in her right leg, she would face the same fate again. Despite trying to gut through it in the match, the pain was too much to bear and she couldn’t continue. The crowd at Full Sail was stunned with silence, shock, and sadness as Ripley advanced via forfeit and Nox will have another heartbreaking setback.

The main event was a hard-hitting battle two indie veterans and returning Mae Young Classic competitors Mia Yim and Toni Storm. Both women were vying for a chance to get closer into the finals after coming up short last year, mixing up strikes and suplexes throughout the incredibly physical match. After ten minutes of action, Toni Storm pulled through defeating her contemporary and is one week away from getting into finals.
